Songs About People # 157 John Sinclair

'They gave him ten for two...'

Today, for whatever reason, is John Lennon day on here. This along with New York City is probably the best track on Lennon's 1972 album Some Time in New York City about which more later. Written for and about John Sinclair, poet, writer, counter-culture activist and manager of The MC5 who had been arrested and imprisoned for ten years for possession of two marijuana joints but possibly more for the political threat he was considered to offer. Though slightly irrelevant as Sinclair had been released by the time the album came out the song itself is notable apart from some variable and questionable lyrics mostly for its queasy, offbeat slide construction and the hook of its chorus where the 'got ta, got ta, got ta...' refrain is repeated to the point at which you think your record needle is stuck. It's not!
