Song of the Day # 969 Kandace Springs

Last night on Jools Holland Later the prime, (well only), terrestrial British TV music programme, they cut after a discussion with Jimmy Page, to a young black female singer perched on a stool with her small Jazz ensemble gathered around her. In the dark studio lighting her huge afro glittered, as did her equally prominent earrings. The song was beautiful and unadorned, reminiscent of some imaginary marriage between Nina Simone at her simplest and Robert Flack. Having explored the album a little afterwards I was slightly less taken, as other tracks seemed more of a marketing exercise of this kind of union and less assured in their purity but this one still stands up. This clip goes with an interview on British Daytime TV where she talks about her heritage, her father. Prince and more.
