Albums of the Year # 22 Peter Perrett - How The West Was Won

From back in July:

Three from the new Peter Perrett record, something of a grand and rather unexpected return, and it's every bit as good as they say it is. Formerly, (of course), lead singer with The Only Ones, a band who always walked one step apart from both Punk and and New Wave, and now back at 65 and in far ruder health than any man who's lived the well-documented life of druggy indolence that he famously has deserved. At least musically.

The album, How the West Was Won, is a rare gem, from first note to last. Remarkably every bit as good as The Only Ones finest moments. Perrett's trademark romanticism just as defiant now on the verge of  his bus pass, as it was in his mid-twenties. The lyrics, arrangements and production are wonderfully judged, and it's all rather poignant, an example of what can be dragged from the apparent burning embers of a life given the necessary resolve and  talent.
